Music

Music plays an important part in life at John Burns. It is a vital part of the daily curriculum with singing being a key element of learning in the classroom. Our creative topic approach to the curriculum allows us to use singing and music to enhance learning and make it a memorable experience for all!

John Burns is a Silver Sing Up School where children share singing with their peers, contribute to the expanding school repertoire and take part in weekly singing assemblies where our “Super Singers” are identified and celebrated.

In Key Stage 2, children who love to sing and perform are given the opportunity to join the JB Choir. The choir perform at various events, concerts and shows throughout the year.  We work closely with Jordan Music for our children to practice their musical skills through various instruments. Our Key Stage 1 children also have the opportunity to join our Key Stage 2 children in our After School Choir Club.

A group of our Y3/Y4 pupils have recently joined 400 children and young people from Wandsworth schools and the Wandsworth Music Academy to perform in a Winter Sounds Concert at Burntwood Academy. They were also accompanied by the Wandsworth Primary Choir and the Wandsworth Concert Orchestra in a programme of joyful music.

“We saw so many people from other schools, I saw some of my friends from “Chesterton”. I think there were 13 schools in total. My favourite song was the “gospel medley”. I was really proud to represent John Burns with my parents watching in the audience.” Anissa Y3 “The music hall was so big, it was like a cinema! Some of us performed in Part 1 and others in Part 2. “When you believe” was my favourite song.” Madison Y3 “We all stood together on stage with the band. When we sang “la bamba” that was my favourite part. Lots of people were watching us.” Amaha Y3

Another wonderful musical tradition is Year 5 singing at the Royal Festival Hall each year, in a truly uplifting performance, with outstanding young musicians from all over Wandsworth. This is a real opportunity of a lifetime to get to perform at such a prestigious venue.
