Science Fair Success!

On 11th March, the John Burns School PTA held their annual Science Fair which attracted just over 500 people (compared to 320 last year) from 30 schools across the London boroughs.

Many thanks for the efforts of the PTA, along with all the parents, carers, staff, governors and ex-pupils (Mathilda and Valeria) that volunteered their time to help with the Science Fair.  A special mention is deserved to the Science Fair creator and fundraiser; Anna Woolston - PTA Chair and Parent Governor. With assistance of British Science Week and Sphere Science Ltd, Anna helped people from all across London explore science together, raising the profile of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) from John Burns School.

Led by our parents and carers who were trained for the event, visitors could make science crafts to take away, experience the Astronaut trail, make Stomp Rockets and attend a Weather Workshop. Whilst sitting outside in the glorious Spring Sunshine, visitors could also try to beat the clock and top the leader board in the Family Engineering Challenge. The main attraction of the afternoon, was a huge Science Dome - a portable digital planetarium inflated in the school hall, which took everyone on an amazing interactive tour of the moon and stars.

Anna wowed the audience outside with a variety of science based tricks including gravity-defying water and optical illusions to make your head spin and along with Ivan entertained everyone with the amazing science behind the Mentos Geyser experiment, simply performed with a bottle of carbonated beverage and a pack of chewy mints!

“A huge thank you to all of you who helped at the Science Day all those who came as visitors. It was a great success and I heard lots of lovely comments about the school, the PTA and the welcome people received, so thank you.” Anna
