School Uniform

At John Burns we are proud of our school uniform as it is an important part of life which helps children to settle into school and feel a sense of belonging. We expect parents to ensure that their children are dressed correctly for school every day and are neat and tidy at all times.

Hair must be tied back if shoulder-length or longer, using a simple hair band. Make-up and nail varnish must not be worn and if it is children will be asked to remove it. No jewellery except stud earnings in pierced ears should be worn, we encourage anyone considering pierced ears to get them done at the beginning of the Summer holiday.

PE KIT

Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit and that all items of uniform are clearly labelled.  It is important that PE kit is in school every day and only taken home at the end of each half term/term.

If at any time you wish your child to be exempt from a PE lesson for medical reasons a letter must be sent in.  Long hair should be tied back and all jewellery should be removed prior to the lesson.

Your child should have the following kit - labelled and in a drawstring bag:

  • Black shorts – no logo
  • Black tracksuit bottoms or black leggings (for outdoor PE/winter sports only) – no logo
  • Plain white t-shirt – no logo
  • Plain black plimsolls or trainers – either laced or with elastic or Velcro

TRAINERS

Children should wear their shoes, as part of school uniform, to and from school each day and during lesson times. They may change into trainers for playtimes only.

WHERE TO BUY OUR UNIFORM

Most of our uniform items are readily available from supermarkets, with just a few John Burns branded items needing to be purchased directly from the school. Items such as branded plain red sweatshirts and book bags can be purchased at the School Office.

LOST PROPERTY

Unfortunately we cannot take responsibility for lost items of clothing, though we keep any unclaimed items of clothing by the corner of our school canteen. Please ensure ALL items of clothing are clearly marked with your child's name.

WET AND COLD WEATHER CLOTHING

Outdoor play and learning are a really important part of our school life. If it's cold or rainy we expect children to come to school in appropriate clothing for the weather. If children walk to school in wellies or trainers, we expect them to have proper school shoes to change into once they arrive. We also ask that parents ensure that their child has a warm, waterproof coat with their name written inside.

WARM AND SUNNY WEATHER CLOTHING

Parts of our playground and outdoor areas can be exposed to the sun. In warm sunny weather we ask that parents apply sun cream to their children before they come to school as this is not something that staff are permitted to do. We also advise that they have a hat and a water bottle.

MOBILE PHONES AND VALUABLE ITEMS

Mobile phones and any other personal devices are not allowed on school premises. Our Year 6 permission to walk home alone form (available from the school office) includes a section for parents/carers to identify whether their child will have a phone or other device with them. We expect these devices to be handed into the School Office every day on arrival, and they can be picked up again at the end of the day at 3.30pm.

Any child found with a mobile phone or other device on school premises will have it confiscated and their parent/carer will be called to come and get collect the item at the end of the school day.

We cannot accept any responsibility for money or other valuables and we strongly advise that children do not bring any of these items into school.
