Rights Respecting School

Following our assessment day in March 2013, the assessors made these comments:

It was particularly notable that the school leadership team has adopted a genuine child rights approach at John Burns, student voice being their top priority.

The climate of mutual respect at John Burns is supported by a system which identifies and rewards children when they adhere to the school values or to the charter.

Children at John Burns School have an impressive knowledge and understanding of the CRC. Young children were able to describe a variety of rights and say why they were important for all children everywhere. Older children discussed rights in a very sophisticated and articulate way; explaining that “everyone has rights all the time, but the rights are not always being met”.
