EYFS – DAVIES Class
Welcome to Early Years!
Our fun and energetic Early Years team consists of Ms. Flood, Mrs. Jackson, Ms. Munday and Miss Messam. We are delighted to be supporting our Early Years children and feel that our engaging and playful approach to learning will be enjoyed by all.
We follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum, also known as the EYFS, which highlights that children learn through a balance of planned, purposeful play and adult led activities. There are seven areas of learning that children will be supported in this year, these being:
- communication and language
- physical development
- personal, social and emotional development
- literacy (this includes Little Wandle phonics sessions)
- mathematics
- understanding the world (people and places)
- expressive arts and design
In Autumn 1, we will be settling the children into their new classroom as well as introducing the class rules and routine. Our topic this half term is driven by the historical strand of Understanding the World, which explores the life of a key historical figure and a medieval castle. We follow a 3P’s approach where we look at a person, a place and a point in time.
PERSON: Queen Elizabeth II
PLACE: Windsor Castle
POINT: A time long, long ago
Stories such as “The Queen’s Knickers”, “The Princess and the Wizard” and “The King’s Hats” will bring the historical period to life. Through scientific exploration of woodland habitat, the children will begin to identify common types of animals and fauna associated with contrasting woodlands.
The children’s interests are at the heart of all learning experiences and topics, therefore our planning and provision are guided by this. Our fantastic indoor and outside environment enables children to choose their own learning experiences. Reception will also partake in Forest School sessions where we visit our outdoor space to learn a variety of skills. These skills include those that are exploratory, social, personal and technical, further developing the areas of learning.
Woven throughout the day are our adult led activities where we come together for group learning such as phonics and maths. Story time is a firm favourite, especially stories by the brilliant author and illustrator, Benji Davies – our class’s namesake! He has written many beautiful picture books such as ‘The Storm Whale’, ‘Tad’ and ‘Grandad’s Island’. I hope the children will love them as much as we do!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to send me an email via the office or talk to me at a pick up time.
