A warm welcome from me, Miss Snelgrove, to the arriving Year 1 class. I am so excited to be teaching you this year – we are going to have lots of fun! This is an exciting year for this class as we are moving into Key Stage 1 and I am sure the children are looking forward to developing their independence.
We will begin the autumn term by learning more about ourselves and the wonderful town of Battersea, where most of us live! Our topic is Home Sweet Home which will give us more of an understanding about our local area and our school. We will also be developing our geographical skills by locating places on maps and drawing our own of our local area. Our ‘3 Ps’ for this topic are:
PERSON: Me
PLACE: John Burns Primary School
POINT: 1858
In English, our first book will be Emily Gravett’s Meerkat Mail, which will allow us to; practise using our phonics; remembering those capital letters, full stops and finger spaces as well as learning how to write a postcard! Our selection of other fantastic stories will also help us practise our fiction and non-fiction writing.
Throughout the year, we continue to develop our maths skills, in particular practising our addition and subtraction skills whilst also learning how to multiply and divide. We will also be learning how to half and quarter objects and quantities as well as telling the time to the hour and half past. We will be very busy this year!
Homework
Homework will be set on a Friday and will consist of a weekly Maths task reflecting the learning for that week and another task chosen from the selection of 10 homework tasks on the homework sheet page. This can be found in the children’s homework books. Alongside this, there will be weekly spellings and we expect all children to read at home daily for at least 10 minutes. Please remember to sign their reading record to show that this has been completed.
School Uniform and PE Kit
Please ensure that all school uniform, including PE kit, is clearly labelled so that missing items are returned. The class have fencing lessons on Thursdays and PE on Friday afternoons in the spring term. Please encourage your child to get dressed independently at home, which will help them when changing in school.
About Me
I have been teaching for 6 years and have taught in Reception, Year 2 and Year 3! I am from Devon but have lived in London for nearly 3 years. I enjoy going to the gym, reading books (I read 12 this summer!) and walking my 3 dogs.
Communication
If you need to talk to me about anything regarding your child, please do not hesitate to contact me either via the school office or at the end of the day.
Best wishes,
Miss Snelgrove
