Welcome to Jeffers Class in Year 1. I am Mrs Oakley, your Year 1 teacher. Our class is named after Oliver Jeffers - a well-known author of many children’s books.
This is an exciting year for this class, as they are moving into Key Stage 1. The year will be full of opportunities and challenges as children will be developing their own independence. I am really excited to get to know and teach your children.
In the autumn term, our focus topic is based on the theme "Home Sweet Home’. Here we will develop our knowledge of the local area and discover more about the vibrant town of Battersea, as well as exploring more about our own history. We will enhance our geographical skills by creating our own maps of the local vicinity. Our ‘3 Ps’ for this topic are:
PERSON: Me
PLACE: John Burns Primary School
POINT: 1858
Subjects
In our English lessons, our initial book will be "Meerkat Mail" by Emily Gravett. We will also read and write simple fiction and non-fiction stories, learn the art of writing postcards and practise phonics. We will reinforce the use of capital letters, full stops, and finger spaces.
Throughout the year, we will continue to sharpen our maths abilities by practising addition and subtraction and venturing into multiplication and division. As well as this, we will be acquiring the skill of telling the time, mastering the concept of halving and quartering and be able to name some common 2-D and 3-D shapes.
In science this term, the children will be carrying out investigations as they learn all about animals including humans. They will learn how to identify and categorise various animals using precise scientific language. Additionally, we will be learning about parts of the body and our senses.
Homework
Homework will be set on Fridays. There will be a weekly maths task corresponding to the week’s lessons. Additionally, there will be weekly spellings. Your child will be provided with a reading book, and we ask that they should read for at least ten minutes every day, and that the reading record is completed and signed.
School Uniform and PE Kit
The children will have gymnastics on Mondays followed by progressive sport. Please make sure that all articles of school uniform, including the PE kit, are clearly marked with your child’s name to facilitate the return of any misplaced items. We encourage you to help your child develop the skill of dressing independently at home, as it will assist them when changing at school.
About Me
This is my first year at John Burns. I live locally and have two children. I graduated in Law at the University of Buckingham and have worked in law and finance. I enjoy art, painting and poetry. I love cycling and reading a good book. I am really looking forward to teaching at such a vibrant and dynamic community-committed school.
Communication
If you need to discuss anything concerning your child, please contact me through the school office or come and see me at the end of the school day.
With very best wishes,
Mrs. Oakley
