The limits of my language mean the limits of my world - Ludwig Wittgenstein

At John Burns Primary School, we believe that learning languages opens doors to the wider world. Our languages curriculum is designed not only to develop confident communication skills but also to deepen pupils’ understanding of different cultures, perspectives and identities. Through rich and meaningful learning experiences, children discover how language connects people and shapes our shared global community.
We follow a CLIL approach (Content and Language Integrated Learning), where language skills are embedded within engaging topics from across the curriculum — including history, geography and science. Whether learning about WWII, exploring the history of Battersea in Spanish, or using Spanish vocabulary linked to the Anglo-Saxons, pupils experience language as purposeful, relevant and exciting. This integrated method strengthens their vocabulary, comprehension and fluency while broadening their knowledge of the world around them.
Intercultural understanding is central to our practice, reflecting the diverse languages and backgrounds of our pupils and their families. We encourage children to ask questions, celebrate differences and notice the similarities that unite us. Our weekly Spanish lessons foster awareness of how languages are connected — for example, recognising that Historia and History share meaning, or that understanding colores helps us decode colours. Pupils recognise that their knowledge of English and their home languages is a powerful tool for understanding and learning new vocabulary in Spanish.

Spanish Dance Workshops - November 2025

Our pupils recently had the opportunity to experience the vibrant energy of Spanish culture through a high-energy flamenco dance workshop. Led by a professional dancer from West End in Schools and created in collaboration with acclaimed flamenco artist Magdalena Mannion, the sessions invited children from Early Years to Year 6 to explore rhythm, movement, and expression through the joyful garrotín flamenco style.
The workshops combined Spanish music, language, and history with traditional dance, offering each year group a tailored and engaging experience. With exclusive recorded vocals by international flamenco singer Anna Colom, children learned to move with confidence, work as a team, and express themselves creatively. Each session ended with a short performance, giving pupils the chance to showcase their newfound skills and celebrate the colourful spirit of flamenco.
